Nina Thorne, LMSW
a licensed social worker and certified MBSR teacher has developed and taught academic courses in mindfulness and human services at SUNY, Empire State College for over 17 years. A long time Vipassana meditation practitioner, Nina has also studied Hatha and Yin Yoga, as well as Qi Gong and Tai Chi with master Chen Wei Gun and Dr. Yang Yang. Since completion of the MBSR Teacher Training at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at UMass Medical School, Nina has brought mindfulness programs to the East End of Long Island. She has offered workshops in mindfulness in public schools, hospice settings, libraries, and professional organizations. Nina has completed Level ll of the MindfulSchools Program. Her special focus for the past several years has been on helping individuals with cancer, HIV, and other health challenges in the area of stress management. She has completed a year long study in the Integrated Study and Practice Program at Barre Center for Buddhist Studies and is a certified Evidence-Based QiGong (EBQ) Instructor.

a licensed clinical psychologist and certified MBSR teacher, maintains a private practice of psychotherapy and
mindfulness training in Stony Brook. She
completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Yale University School of Medicine and has served as Coordinator of Mindfulness
Programs at the Counseling and Psychological Services, Stony Brook University; Assistant Director of Counseling for Training at SBU; and Associate Professor of
Psychology at SUNY/Empire State College.
For over 30 years, Cheryl’s commitment to bringing mindfulness training to the
university community led her to develop a wide range of educational and
clinical programs for students, staff and faculty at SBU. Her interest in the integration of psychotherapy, mindfulness and yoga guides her own clinical work as well as her educational offerings for health
care professionals and teachers.
Since completion of the MBSR Teacher Training at the Center for Mindfulness in Medicine, Health Care, and Society at UMass Medical School, Cheryl has been offering mindfulness programs at Avalon Park and Preserve in Stony Brook. Her study of contemplative practices include Yoga, Tibetan Buddhist (Shambhala), Vipassana meditation, and East/West psychology with John Welwood, Ph.D.
In 2013 she deepend her study of Buddhism and completed a year-long course in the Integrated Study and Practice Program at Barre Center for Buddhist Studies, and more recently certified as a Kripalu Yoga Teacher. In 1987 she journeyed,
under the guidance of
Swami Rama of the Himalayan Institute for Yoga Science and Philosophy to Gangotri and Gomuk, India, the source
of the Ganges River.
